What You Should Expect from Your Tax Pro

I know finding a tax professional you can trust feels daunting. It can feel invasive, right? You are handing over the details of your financial life to a stranger, and you might be worried about judgment or whether they really have your back. It’s stressful, and that is completely normal.

But here’s what I want you to understand: You deserve more than just someone who enters data into a computer once a year. You deserve a partner who is looking out for your best interests. If you are shopping for a tax pro, or evaluating the one you have, here is what you should be looking for.

1. Year-Round Partnership, Not Just Tax Season Service

A lot of places pop up in January and disappear in May. That doesn’t help you when you sell a house in July or start a business in October. A good tax pro is there for you throughout the year.

You need to be able to pick up the phone when life changes happen—marriage, divorce, a new kid, a new investment—and ask, “How does this affect my taxes?” It’s about building an ongoing relationship, not just a transaction.

2. Clear Communication in Plain English

Tax law is confusing. I get it. But your pro shouldn’t make it more confusing by drowning you in jargon. They should explain the “why” and “how” behind your return in plain English.

For example, if you have a loss on your business (Schedule C), a good pro won’t just say “it’s limited.” They’ll explain: “Because you didn’t actively participate in the business this year, the IRS classifies this as ‘passive activity,’ meaning we can’t use this loss to lower the tax on your regular W-2 income right now.” Making you feel informed, rather than confused, is part of the job.

3. IRS Advocacy and Representation

Going up against the IRS is intimidating. You might be thinking you have to handle audits or scary letters yourself. You don’t. My role is to stand between you and the agency. As an Enrolled Agent, that’s my job.

I speak their language so you don’t have to. I protect your rights and make sure you don’t pay a penny more than you legitimately owe. You should never have to face the IRS alone.

4. Accurate and Thorough Tax Preparation

This sounds basic, right? But here’s the reality: accuracy prevents nightmares. It’s not just about filling out forms; it’s about the details that prevent IRS notices before they happen.

We need to maximize every deduction and credit you are entitled to, but we also need to ensure we have the proper documentation to support those positions. It’s about quality review processes that catch errors.

  • Attention to detail: For example, rather than just guessing at a standard deduction, we dig into your medical expenses or charitable contributions to see if itemizing saves you more money.
  • Verification: If something looks unclear on your documents, I don’t just make an assumption. I follow up with you to get the story straight.

5. Strategic Tax Planning (Not Just Historical Reporting)

Most tax prep is just looking in the rear-view mirror—reporting what already happened. But real value comes from looking forward.

We should be doing proactive planning to minimize your tax liability for next year. Whether it’s adjusting your withholdings or setting up a retirement plan for your small business, I help you make tax-smart decisions throughout the year so there are no nasty surprises in April.

6. Transparency and Honesty

You shouldn’t have to guess what the bill will be. A good pro provides clear fee structures upfront with no surprise bills. But beyond fees, you deserve honesty about your situation. I’m here to tell you what is possible and what isn’t, setting realistic expectations about your refund or liability so you can plan your life accordingly.

Ask yourself, is your current tax professional doing this for you?

This can feel overwhelming, but we can work through it together. You don’t have to navigate this maze by yourself. Let me know if you want to get on a call to discuss your situation.
